The ease with which individuals can cooperate, ranging from sitting next to each other and conversing frequently to being separated by region, country, continent, time zone and working for different companies with the relationship governed by a contract. At its most extreme, a Ladder Shaker such as a relationship manager is inserted between two parties who are prevented from communicating directly.
The shorter the Communication Span, the more productively people can work together. Organisational changes such as consolidation, outsourcing and offshoring increase communication span and thus reduce productivity.
